The Gospel According to Wanda B Lazarus: A Woman’s Place is in the World
“The Gospel According to Wanda B. Lazarus is just what the world needs now. Lynn Joffe’s writing is so alive, and wicked, and mad, and full of surprises. Like a Jewish Molly Bloom … let loose in history. I love the way such a vast sweep of time and history is grounded in the grain and dirt of real life. A novel charged with music, energy, bounce, juice and joy”– Stephen Fry
The book was published in South Africa at the end of November 2020. While in conversation with Benji Shulman, Lynn Joffe will intriguingly envelope us in the magic behind her book, on the 8th of March 2021 at 4PM in an ORT Jet Zoom Webinar.
ORT Jet will host the event as part their webinar series for the year and fundraising efforts. Lynn will be donating a percentage of the book sales to ORT Jet” said ORT Jet HOD, Helene Itzkin. “We rely on funding to continue providing businesses with support so we are so thankful to her”
The novel is a serio-comic re-imagining of the myth of the Wandering Jew … as a woman; an anti-hero’s journey, so to speak, from the point of view of Wanda B Lazarus, accidentally cursed with immortality, who freewheels through the ages at the behest of the Muses of antiquity in her quest to become the tenth Muse.
Accidentally cursed with immortality, Wanda has no choice but to keep moving. Each new locale of her serial reincarnations is wittily and vividly rendered. And Wanda gets around –
from Jerusalem in the time of Jesus (who is actually Wanda’s buddy Yossi) to Palmyra, Langue D’Oc to Londinium, New York to Norway – and many places in between. In each she manages to insinuate herself into events that may or may not change the course of history.
Lynn Joffe has written and produced a vast array of storytelling projects for radio, stage and TV. She founded Creatrix, an integrated branded content agency, using storytelling techniques to create behaviour change.
“I wrote the novel for my Master of Arts in Creative Writing at Wits University, in 2017, and have spent the last two years transforming it into a publishable novel with one of SA’s foremost editors, Alison Lowry, who has helmed a slew of noted novels both locally and internationally,” said Joffe
“I personally get very excited when I have time with Lynn one is guaranteed a wicked fun-filled encounter. Not only is Lynn most generous with dishing out her quick witted humour, but with her Tzadokka too,” said Itzkin.
