Ian is the MD of Gateways Business Consultants, CEO of OVO Incubators, Chairman of Khulisa Social Solutions, and the MD of Gateways Tracing Services. His reviews of business books are published bi-weekly in Fin25 and monthly on 702. Holds 5 degrees.

Ian’s practice is focused on assisting companies to formulate and implement their strategies. I have worked in 14 countries, with organizations ranging from a shipbuilder in Saudi Arabia to SANCA (an NPO) in South Africa, and much in between. I only work with one company in an industry because of intimate knowledge of these businesses you glean by working on strategy. The benefit to me has been the wide variety of exposure I have obtained.

My signature methodology is ‘Functional Strategy’, described in my book ‘Strategy that Works’ (2012) and ‘Managing with Intent’ (2002) which focuses on the execution of strategy.

Fundamentally, it rejects the idea of strategy as a cleverly crafted action plan from where you are to where you wish to be in 5 years’ time. It has recently become the dominant approach to strategy over the past few years as people realized the impossibility of predicting the future with any accuracy.

Amanda Blankfield-Koseff holds an honours degree in Organisational Communication, completing her undergraduate degree through Bond University, and honours through UNISA. Amanda has had experience in journalism, door-to-door sales and marketing communications. She worked as a marketing and events manager for almost six years at NPO Afrika Tikkun. She has found her passion is with youth development. Empowervate Trust is a youth development NPO that was registered in 2013. Its flagship programme is The Youth Citizens Action Programme (Y-CAP), which was born out of Afrika Tikkun in 2009, initially as a youth dialogue. The programme is run in collaboration with Department of Basic Education and with the major support of Deutsche Bank South Africa Foundation and DSV Mounties South Africa.
The Youth Citizens Action Programme (Y-CAP) empowers and motivates young people from primary and secondary schools to solve or lessen the social, environmental, educational or economic problems within their schools or communities. This is achieved through Y-CAP’s toolkit and workshops that provide project management skills development, and showcase platforms at district, provincial and national level. Over the past 13 years of Y-CAP, over 40451 learners have been impacted by the programme and encouraged to be active citizens with a social entrepreneurship mindset.
